Patrik Brundin serves as Professor of Neuroscience and Head of the Department of Experimental Medical Science at Lund University's Faculty of Medicine, Sweden, a position held since 2000 following his professorship at Copenhagen University in experimental neuropathology.
His academic training includes:
- PhD in Neuroscience from Lund University (1988) under Anders Björklund, recognized with the Oscar II award for best medical thesis
- MD from Lund University (1994) with medical licensure after clinical internship
Brundin's research centers on neurodegenerative mechanisms in basal ganglia disorders, with pioneering work in neural transplantation for Parkinson's and Huntington's disease. His investigations span CAG triplet repeat pathology, mitochondrial dysfunction in neuronal death, and translational approaches to cell-based therapies, driving innovations in movement disorder treatments through both basic science and clinical applications.
Major recognitions include:
- Bernard Sanberg Memorial Award for neural transplantation research
- Swedish Parkinson Association Medal of Honour (2003)
- Outstanding Young Persons of the World Award (2001)
- Catedra Santiago Grisolía Chair Prize (2001)
- Dr Eric K Fernström Foundation Prize (1999)
He has secured significant research funding including Swedish Medical Research Council grants while mentoring next-generation scientists. As leader of Lund's Neuronal Survival Unit, he directs international collaborations through Euro-HD Network and NECTAR, advancing global research in neurodegenerative disease mechanisms and therapeutic development.
