Dr Patrick Tom serves as a Lecturer (University Teacher) in International Relations at the University of Sheffield's School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations since Spring 2022. He is also the Assistant Editor for the journal *Peacebuilding*. Prior to this, he held teaching roles at the Universities of Manchester, St Andrews, Zimbabwe, and Sharjah (UAE). His consultancy work includes projects with UNESCO, Arigatou International, and Education Scotland’s Building Racial Literacy initiative.
Dr Tom earned his PhD in International Relations from the University of St Andrews, along with MA degrees in International Peace Studies (Kroc Institute, Notre Dame), Conflict, Development and Security (Leeds), and Philosophy (Zimbabwe). His research focuses on critical peacebuilding approaches in Africa, emphasizing hybrid governance, post-colonial institutional dynamics, and the intersection of top-down and bottom-up peace initiatives. He explores themes such as youth resilience in displacement, climate change activism among African youth, and extractive industries governance, often situating these within Southern African and West African contexts.
His teaching philosophy centers on Ubuntu principles, promoting inclusive, participatory education that emphasizes human interconnectedness. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses including POL240 (Africa in the World), POL3026 (War, Peace and Justice), and POL6616 (Development and the State). He has been recognized with the 2016 Canon Collins Educational and Legal Trust Change Makers Award for his Kauzhumba Primary School Building Project in Zimbabwe.
Patrick’s fieldwork spans Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, investigating governance, peace and justice, development, human rights, and indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms. His professional memberships include roles with UNESCO and Education Scotland, reflecting his commitment to integrating theory with practice in global citizenship education and anti-racism initiatives.
