Patrick Sullivan is a tenured Professor of Neuroscience and Endowed Chair at the Spinal Cord & Brain Injury Research Center (SCoBIRC) at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center. He also serves as a Research Physiologist at the Lexington Veterans Affairs Medical Center, demonstrating his dual commitment to academic research and clinical translation in neurotrauma.
Dr. Sullivan's research focuses on the critical role of mitochondria in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord injury (SCI) pathology. His laboratory investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal degeneration following CNS injuries, with particular emphasis on mitochondrial failure pathways. His work spans from basic mechanisms of cell death to therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondrial dysfunction. Current research directions include investigating mitochondrial transfer between cells, sphingolipid regulation in neurodegeneration, and pharmacological interventions to restore bioenergetic function after injury.
His publication record shows consistent productivity with research spanning traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's disease, and mitochondrial medicine. Recent work demonstrates expansion into aging-related neurodegeneration while maintaining his core focus on neurotrauma mechanisms. His collaborative network includes researchers across neuroscience, metabolism, and clinical neurology fields.
Dr. Sullivan leads research within the Spinal Cord & Brain Injury Research Center, which serves as a hub for interdisciplinary neuroscience research at the University of Kentucky. His work bridges basic science investigations with potential clinical applications for neurotrauma patients.
