John Carib Gensel is a Professor of Physiology and the Director of the Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center (SCoBIRC) at the University of Kentucky. He holds an SCoBIRC Endowed Chair #5 and leads research on macrophage biology in neurotrauma. His work focuses on understanding how CNS macrophages contribute to repair after spinal cord and brain injuries, aiming to develop therapies that translate to human patients.
Research Interests: Dr. Gensel investigates the biological mechanisms regulating CNS macrophage responses to injury. Key areas include inducing pro-reparative macrophage phenotypes, identifying receptor pathways for therapeutic targeting, and studying macrophage roles in traumatic brain injury and age-related inflammation. His research combines experimental models with translational goals to address neurotrauma challenges.
Publications: His recent work includes studies on ear regeneration in spiny mice, azithromycin's neuroimmune effects, and the role of non-resolving neuroinflammation in chronic spinal cord injury. He also advocates for open science through initiatives like the Open Data Commons for Spinal Cord Injury (odc-sci.org).
Labs/Teams: As SCoBIRC Director, he oversees multidisciplinary teams collaborating on neurotrauma research. The center integrates basic science, clinical research, and translational studies to advance treatments for spinal cord and brain injuries.
