Patrick Sparto is a Professor and Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also serves as Co-Director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy and Bioengineering (PhD) Program. He holds appointments in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) and the SHRS PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science. His clinical expertise focuses on balance and vestibular conditions in older adults. He has trained 21 PhD students and received NIH, Department of Defense, and University of Pittsburgh Older Americans Independence Center grants.
- Education: BS Mechanical Engineering (University of Dayton), MPT (University of Pittsburgh), PhD Biomedical Engineering (Ohio State University).
- Affiliations: American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy, International Society for Posture and Gait Research.
His research investigates interventions for vestibular disorders, mechanisms of postural control in aging, and dual-task challenges in mobility. Key findings link psychosocial factors to mobility outcomes and explore dopaminergic influences on gait resilience. He co-developed the Dynamic Exertion Test (EXiT) for concussion management and validated the 9-item Vestibular Activities Avoidance Instrument. His work emphasizes neurorehabilitation, geriatric biomechanics, and clinical trial design.
Awards include the Catherine Worthingham Fellow of APTA and the Institute for Clinical Research Education Mentoring Award. He advises on vestibular rehabilitation protocols and leads multidomain interventions for mild traumatic brain injury in military and civilian populations.
