Dr. Patrick Reid serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center's College of Medicine. His research laboratory focuses on understanding molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis for emerging viral pathogens, with particular expertise in Chikungunya virus and Ebola virus. He maintains active collaborations across virology and immunology research communities and contributes significantly to the understanding of host-pathogen interactions in viral diseases.
Education:
- PhD - Microbiology, Mount Sinai School of Biological Sciences (2007)
- MS - Molecular Biology, University of Georgia (2002)
- BS - University of Rochester (1999)
Dr. Reid's research interests center on arboviruses and emerging viral pathogens, with a focus on how host proteins interact with viral components during infection. His laboratory investigates the role of specific host factors like Sphingosine kinase 2 during Chikungunya infection and host protein interactions with Ebola virus nucleoprotein. His work aims to identify novel therapeutic targets by elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying viral pathogenesis. He has made significant contributions to understanding how alphaviruses cause chronic joint pathology similar to rheumatoid arthritis.
An analysis of Dr. Reid's recent publications reveals consistent research in virology with particular emphasis on emerging viral threats. His work spans from fundamental research on alphaviruses like Chikungunya to more recent investigations of SARS-CoV-2. A clear pattern emerges showing his expertise in host-pathogen interactions, with multiple studies focusing on how viral proteins interact with host cellular machinery. His research has practical applications in therapeutic development, as evidenced by publications on antiviral compounds and protease inhibitors.
Scientific Awards:
- Best Poster Presentation International Conference on Antiviral Research, International Society for Antiviral Research (2015)
- Fellow, Biotechnology Institute (2005)
- Annual Graduate School Service Award (2004)
Dr. Reid leads an active research laboratory investigating viral pathogenesis mechanisms. His team has made important discoveries regarding host protein interactions with viral components, particularly focusing on Chikungunya virus nsP3 protein and its interaction with host Sphingosine kinase 2. Current research directions include understanding chronic joint pathology following viral infection and identifying novel therapeutic targets for emerging viral pathogens. The laboratory employs advanced techniques including molecular virology, cell biology, and animal models to address fundamental questions in viral pathogenesis.
