Patrick Peter Bernhard is a Professor of Modern European History at the University of Oslo (UiO), affiliated with the Department of History within the Faculty of Humanities. He specializes in transnational history, focusing on fascism, colonialism, World War II, genocide, consumerism, and Cold War cultures. His research emphasizes entangled histories, particularly between Germany and Italy, exploring topics like Axis alliances, racial policies, and cultural exchanges.
Education: PhD in History (2005, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich) with a thesis on 1960s West German pacifism. He has held academic positions across institutions in Germany, Italy, Ireland, and Norway, including roles at the German Historical Institute in Rome and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Current research projects include 'In the Shadow of El Alamein' on North African war violence and 'A Tale of Modernity' examining Italian cuisine's global spread.
Teaching includes courses on WWII, consumerism, racism, and transnational history. Notable publications include works on Nazi racial policies, colonial entanglements, and Holocaust studies. He has advised students like Sabine Küntzel (PhD) and supervised award-winning theses. Engaged in public outreach, he advises policymakers on historical injustices and collaborates with international media and academic journals.
