Patrick M. Cronin is a Scholar in Residence at Carnegie Mellon University’s Institute for Strategy & Technology and serves as the Asia-Pacific Security Chair at the Hudson Institute. Previously, he held senior roles at institutions such as the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), the National Defense University (INSS), and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). He also served in the U.S. government, including as a high-ranking official at USAID during the George W. Bush administration and as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
Dr. Cronin holds a D.Phil. and M.Phil. in international relations from the University of Oxford (St. Antony’s College) and graduated with high honors from the University of Florida. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Virginia, Johns Hopkins SAIS, and Georgetown University.
His research focuses on Asian strategies, U.S. national security in the Indo-Pacific, great-power competition, North Korea, and alliance dynamics. He frequently contributes to leading publications like The Straits Times and Dong-A Ilbo, and participates in the Defense & Aerospace Report’s Washington Roundtable podcast. His work bridges academic analysis, policy advocacy, and public discourse on global security challenges.
