Patrick Harwood is an English & Communication Lecturer at South Carolina State University (SC State), where he has taught since 2014. Previously, he served as a Communication instructor at the College of Charleston and spent 12 years in public relations there. With a BSc in Mass Communications from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MS in Journalism from Northwestern University, Harwood combines academic expertise with a rich professional background in journalism, notably as a television news reporter in Virginia, North Carolina, Louisiana, and South Carolina. His research and creative work center on cemeteries, bird photography, and historical preservation, reflected in five self-published books, including Stories from the Underground: The Churchyards of Charleston (2022) and The Birds of Magnolia Cemetery (2024). He actively blogs about his avian observations and historical explorations, blending narrative, photography, and cultural analysis. Harwood’s work highlights the intersection of nature, history, and storytelling, with presentations at venues like the Charleston Audubon Society and cemetery preservation groups. His photography spans birds, landscapes, and urban landmarks, showcased in books, blogs, and YouTube videos. He is also an Adobe InDesign enthusiast, designing his publications himself.
