Dr. Patrick Harris is an Associate Professor in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology at the UQ Centre for Clinical Research, part of The University of Queensland's Faculty of Health, Medicine, and Behavioural Sciences. He completed his medical degree at University College London and specialized in infectious diseases and microbiology in Australia, with postgraduate training in the UK and a Senior Visiting Fellowship at Singapore's National University Hospital. His research focuses on antibiotic-resistant bacteria, clinical trials for novel antibiotic strategies, and genomic applications in microbiology. He leads the MERINO trials evaluating carbapenem-sparing treatments and the Queensland Genomics Clinical Demonstration Project integrating genomics into healthcare.
- Education: BSc (Durham University), MBBS (University College London)
- Current Roles: NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow, Group Leader (UQCCR)
Research Interests: Antibiotic resistance mechanisms, clinical genomics, and improving diagnostic technologies. His work includes over 250 peer-reviewed articles, including high-impact journals like JAMA and The Lancet. Key projects involve genomic surveillance of hospital-acquired infections and clinical trials like MERINO-2 for AmpC-producing Enterobacter species.
Grants and Funding: NHMRC Fellowships, Queensland Genomics Alliance projects, and industry partnerships (e.g., Shionogi & Company). Current grants focus on antibiotic dosing optimization, genomic diagnostics, and device-related infection prevention.
Labs/Teams: Leads infectious diseases research groups at UQCCR, collaborating with global networks like the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Network.
