Dr. Adam G. Stewart is a Senior Lecturer at the UQ Centre for Clinical Research within The University of Queensland's Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences. An Infectious Diseases Physician and Clinical Microbiologist, he holds qualifications including BBiomedSci, MBBS (Hons), MPHTM, FRACP, and FRCPA. His work focuses on improving outcomes for patients with complex infections, particularly those who are immunocompromised.
Dr. Stewart's educational background includes a Bachelor of Biomedical Science and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Griffith University, and a Masters in Public Health and Tropical Medicine from James Cook University. He recently completed his PhD thesis in 2025 titled "Treatment strategies for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and AmpC-producing Enterobacterales" through the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Queensland.
His research spans four primary areas: evaluating new antimicrobial agents, conducting clinical trials for infectious diseases, developing improved diagnostic methods, and addressing infectious complications in transplant recipients. Dr. Stewart's work particularly emphasizes infections in immunocompromised patients, antimicrobial resistance, and optimizing treatment protocols for bloodstream infections. His expertise bridges clinical practice with translational research to address urgent challenges in infectious diseases.
Analysis of Dr. Stewart's recent publications reveals a strong focus on bloodstream infections across diverse patient populations, with particular attention to immunocompromised hosts including transplant recipients. His work spans antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, novel treatment strategies, and diagnostic innovations. Notably, his research demonstrates interdisciplinary collaboration across microbiology, pharmacology, and clinical medicine to address complex infectious disease challenges.
Dr. Stewart has secured multiple research grants, including current funding through 2025 for "COVID-19 Cure Research" from the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital Foundation. His past grants include studies on oral cephalosporin/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations against ESBL-producing uropathogens, therapeutic drug monitoring for hydroxychloroquine dosing in critically ill COVID-19 patients, and assessing antibiotic effects on gut microbiota. He is actively involved in several multicenter clinical trials including MERINO-3, which compares ceftolozane-tazobactam versus meropenem for bloodstream infections.
