He holds a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BA from Georgetown University. His research focuses on early modern philosophy, particularly John Locke and Isaac Newton, exploring intersections between philosophy, theology, and natural sciences. His research interests span early modern thought, history of philosophy of science, medieval philosophy, American Indian philosophy, and applied ethics. He examines topics like Locke’s cognitive psychology, Newtonian metaphysics, and the philosophical reception of scientific ideas in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Recent publications analyze figures such as George Cheyne, Richard Bentley, and Susanna Newcome, addressing themes like causation, utilitarian origins, and cosmological arguments. His work often bridges historical scholarship with contemporary debates in metaphysics and epistemology.
Current projects include Newtonian metaphysics studies and interdisciplinary editing initiatives. Connolly’s teaching reflects his expertise in early modern philosophy and its broader cultural contexts.
