Walter Ott is Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Corcoran Department of Philosophy at the University of Virginia. His research examines metaphysics and philosophy of mind from the early modern period through Kant, with emphasis on perception, causation, and laws of nature. Authored multiple monographs including analysis of Locke's philosophy of language and modern conceptions of natural laws.
Research reconstructs historical debates about perception in Descartes and Malebranche while engaging contemporary metaphysical questions about causal powers. Current work explores Hobbes' theory of sensory deception and Locke's account of perceptual judgment.
Publications demonstrate rigorous historical analysis applied to persistent philosophical problems. Recent articles critique dispositional theories of causation and reinterpret early modern accounts of sensory representation, bridging historical scholarship with systematic metaphysics.
