Lisa Downing

Lisa Downing is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Ohio State University's College of Arts and Sciences. She specializes in early modern philosophy, particularly the intersection of philosophy and natural philosophy in the 17th-18th centuries.

Her research examines mechanist conceptions of body, gravity/attraction, efficient causation, and scientific explanation. Current projects investigate Locke's metaphysics in relation to Newtonian frameworks.

Downing has held academic positions at University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, and was a Dibner Institute for History of Science fellow.
