Patrick Bahls

Patrick Bahls is a Professor of Liberal Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) since 2022. Previously, he served as Professor of Mathematics and Director of the UNC Asheville Prison Education Program (2020–22) and held roles at the University of North Carolina Asheville, including directing the University Honors Program (2016–20). His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University and teaching roles at institutions like the University of Illinois (UIUC) and Louisiana State University.

Education: Ph.D. in Mathematics (Vanderbilt), M.S. and B.S. in Mathematics (University of Denver). Research interests span mathematics, education reform, social justice, and interdisciplinary studies. He has been recognized with awards such as the Distinguished Teacher of the Year (2014–15) and the Ruth and Leon Feldman Professorship (2020). Bahls has contributed to over 15 academic publications, focusing on topics like urban renewal, mathematics education, and social equity.

Key contributions include integrating Indigenous knowledge into STEM curricula and examining redlining’s impact on historic preservation. He has advised numerous honors programs and served on committees for organizations like the National Collegiate Honors Council and the Mathematical Association of America. Bahls also mentors through initiatives like the Gilbert-Chappell Poetry Fellowship and the Louisiana Mathematics and Science Teachers' Institute.

His work bridges academia and community, exemplified by prison education programs and collaborative projects on mass incarceration. Current affiliations include the North Carolina Political Science Association and the Council of Writing Program Administrators.
