Patricia Steinhoff is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Hawaii. Her academic journey began as a Japan specialist, leading her to sociology to analyze Japanese society. She holds a PhD from Harvard University (1969) and a BA from the University of Michigan (1963). Her research focuses on the Japanese radical left, using qualitative methods such as interviews and content analysis. She has studied prewar and postwar Japanese social movements, Hawaii’s abortion law reform, and post-legalization demographic impacts. Her teaching includes courses on Japanese society, sociology theory, and research methods, where she employs innovative qualitative content analysis techniques using Microsoft Access.
