Patricia J. Roylance is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on early American literature, transnationalism, material culture, and the history of the book. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University (2005) and a B.A. from Harvard University (1998).

Research Interests: Roylance examines how 19th-century U.S. literature engaged with global empires, media transformations, and Indigenous histories. Her book Eclipse of Empires (2013) analyzes U.S. anxieties toward collapsed empires, while her ongoing work The Timescapes of Nineteenth-Century U.S. Media explores transmedial adaptations of texts like Uncle Tom’s Cabin. She also investigates Indigenous education initiatives and colonial material culture.
