
Patricia Holm

Patricia Holm is a Professor of Ecology at the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Basel, Switzerland, since 2003. She has held leadership roles in environmental research, including directing the national research program 'FISCHNETZ' (1999–2003) and serving as Deputy Director of the Department for Electron Microscopy at the University of Bern (1992–1999). Her work bridges ecological research, sustainable development, and environmental policy.
- Education: Dr. rer. nat. (1989) and State Examination for Teaching (1985) from the University of Heidelberg; Venia Docendi for Ecology (1999) from the University of Bern.
Her research focuses on ecotoxicology, anthropogenic impacts on aquatic ecosystems, and sustainable development. Key areas include microplastics, endocrine disruptors, invasive species, and pollution effects on fish and cetaceans. She has supervised over 65 graduate/postgraduate theses and secured substantial funding (~1.7 mio CHF/year).
Scientific leadership roles include Vice President of the Swiss Committee on Polar and High Altitude Research (since 2020), Convenor of the IWC Sub-Committee on Environmental Concerns (since 2019), and board membership at the Naturhistorisches Museum Basel (since 2017). She also contributed to international advisory bodies on marine plastic litter.
