G. Thomas Chandler is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Arnold School of Public Health, University of South Carolina. He directs the Meiobenthic Ecology and Estuarine Ecotoxicology Laboratory, focusing on estuarine ecotoxicology, endocrine disruption in invertebrates, and the effects of emerging contaminants like nanomaterials. His work integrates molecular, ecological, and geochemical approaches to study benthic organisms and their responses to environmental stressors.
Education: M.Sc. and Ph.D. (degrees unspecified). Research interests include sediment biogeochemistry, climate change impacts on foraminifera, and genetic responses to toxicants. He has led or co-led grants from the EPA, NSF, and NOAA since 1999, addressing topics such as nanoparticle behavior, endocrine disruptors, and ecotoxicological risk assessment.
Students and lab members include Jessica K. Blanks, Ryan Templeton, Will W. Klauber, and Kate Washburn. His lab develops analytical tools for assessing contaminants in wastewater-impacted systems and maintains culturing facilities for copepods and foraminifera. Key projects include studies on carbon nanotube toxicity, nanomaterial biodegradation, and the ecological role of meiobenthos in carbon cycling.
Labs/Teams: Director of the Meiobenthic Ecology and Estuarine Ecotoxicology Laboratory. Office: Public Health Research Center, 921 Assembly Street, 422C. Collaborations span marine geology, microbial ecology, and environmental engineering.
