Patricia Cabral is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Occidental College, appointed in 2018. She holds a B.A. and M.A. from California State University, Northridge, and a Ph.D. in Psychological Sciences from the University of California, Merced.
Her research focuses on health-risk behaviors among adolescents and young adults, particularly examining how these behaviors contribute to racial/ethnic disparities in health outcomes. A recent study highlighted generational status, familial bonds (familismo), and socio-emotional competence as critical factors influencing risk behaviors in Latina adolescents. Cabral emphasizes mentorship, especially for underrepresented students, reflecting her own experiences as a first-generation college student. She is known for her engaging teaching style and commitment to student interaction.
Outside academia, Cabral enjoys travel, fiction reading, hiking, and attending concerts, with a particular fondness for her trip to Egypt to see the pyramids.
