Patricia A. Young

Dr. Patricia A. Young is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on culture-based information and communication technologies (ICTs), including the Culture-Based Model for ICT design, and the historical development of educational technologies by and for African Americans. She developed Proticy, a learning analytics software enhancing higher education pedagogy.

Dr. Young has received prestigious awards, including three AECT service awards (2019), the 2009 AECT Outstanding Journal Article Award, and a 2021 AECT Outstanding Publication Award for her book Human Specialization in Design and Technology. She is the first African American woman on the editorial board of Educational Technology Research and Development.

Her work emphasizes innovation across education, industry, and human performance. She leads initiatives in intercultural instructional design and advocates for technology solutions rooted in cultural frameworks.
