Gloria Chuku is a Professor and Chair of Africana Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), holding the Lipitz Professorship (2020–21) in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS). Her research focuses on Igbo ethnic identity, Nigerian history, gender studies, and African epistemology. She is internationally recognized for her scholarship on Igbo women’s economic roles and decolonization processes.
Her academic contributions include the seminal book Igbo Women and Economic Transformation in Southeastern Nigeria, 1900–1960 (2005), which earned her the Ali Mazrui Award (2017). Current research involves a new book project examining Igbo identity formation in Nigeria and the diaspora, with archival work at Oxford’s Bodleian Libraries and London’s National Archives.
At UMBC, Chuku has revitalized cultural initiatives like the Model African Union and Taste of Africa festival. She serves on interdisciplinary committees, including the Provost’s Advisory Committee and the USM Women’s Forum Executive Council. Her leadership extended to organizing a landmark 2018 international conference on women’s roles in the Nigeria-Biafra War.
