Dr. Pascal Berrill is a Professor of Silviculture & Restoration at Cal Poly Humboldt, specializing in multiaged forest management, climate adaptation, and carbon sequestration. He leads large-scale field experiments across California, including coast redwood, Douglas-fir, and aspen restoration projects. His research integrates Indigenous knowledge with Western science to address wildfire resilience and ecosystem recovery. Educated at UC Berkeley (Ph.D. 2008) and the University of Canterbury (B.For.Sc. 1999), he teaches courses such as Advanced Forest Ecosystems and Silviculture. His work emphasizes bridging ecological and social dimensions of forest management.
Education:
- Ph.D., Silviculture, UC Berkeley, 2008
- M.S., Silviculture, UC Berkeley, 2003
- B.For.Sc., Forestry Science, University of Canterbury, 1999
Research Interests:
His research focuses on silvicultural techniques for degraded forest rehabilitation, climate change mitigation through carbon forestry, and Tribal co-management strategies. Key areas include redwood genetics, wildfire impact mitigation, and restoring aspen ecosystems post-disturbance. Collaborations with federal agencies and Indigenous communities inform his applied fieldwork.
Publications & Grants:
Over 80 published works, including studies on bark thickness adaptations, assisted migration of redwoods, and tribal stewardship frameworks. His research has been funded by grants addressing forest resilience and carbon dynamics.
Labs/Teams: Active in collaborative networks such as the Sierra Nevada Adaptive Management Project and Redwood Ecosystem Science and Management Institute.
