Jeremy Fried is a Courtesy Faculty member at Oregon State University's College of Forestry, affiliated with the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources & Management, and serves as a Research Forester with the USDA Forest Service PNW Research Station in Portland, OR. He holds a PhD in Wildland Resource Science from UC Berkeley (1992), an M.S. in Forest Management from Oregon State University (1985), and a B.S. in Forestry from UC Berkeley (1982).
His research focuses on forest management strategies that enhance fire resistance, carbon sequestration, and economic viability through silvicultural interventions and biomass utilization. Key projects include developing the BioSum model to assess management effectiveness and cost-benefit trade-offs, analyzing fire effects on forest carbon dynamics, and evaluating fuel treatment strategies' long-term efficacy. Fried emphasizes integrating inventory science with innovative approaches to address climate change impacts and wildfire risks.
Current research topics include bioregional inventory-based simulation under management, forest carbon dynamics on the West Coast, and fire effects monitoring. His work bridges ecological, economic, and operational challenges to achieve sustainable forest management outcomes.
Labs/Teams: Fried leads the USDA Forest Service PNW Research Station's Resource Monitoring and Assessment Program team, responsible for developing tools like BioSum and advancing interdisciplinary forest management solutions.
