Research Interests: Dr. Vanin's work integrates theoretical and empirical analyses to explore how political structures, social norms, and crime interact with economic development. His recent studies investigate the historical geography of European state systems, the socio-economic origins of organized crime, and the effects of public policies on crime reduction. He has pioneered frameworks analyzing substitution effects in consumer behavior and the interplay between social capital and economic outcomes.
Recent Work Trends: His 2022-2023 publications emphasize historical institutional analysis, particularly the evolution of state systems and their impact on economic trajectories. Earlier work (2015-2020) focused on crime economics, including the Sicilian mafia's resource curse and the policy implications of recreational cannabis legalization. He employs both theoretical models and empirical methods, often combining historical data with contemporary case studies.
Professional Service: He currently serves as Deputy Director and Head of Research at the University of Bologna's Department of Economics. He has organized major international conferences, including the 2019 Ec/Hist Workshop, and held leadership roles in academic committees. His invited lectures include presentations at the Catalan Economic Society Conference and the Hamburg Lecture on Law & Economics.
Research Environment: His work is conducted within the Department of Economics' vibrant research ecosystem at the University of Bologna, collaborating with institutions globally on projects linking historical political geography with modern economic challenges.
