Paola Papoff serves as Associate Professor at Sapienza University of Rome within the Department of Maternal and Child Health and Urological Sciences. Her clinical work centers at Umberto I Policlinico in Rome where she leads the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (UOD Terapia Intensiva Pediatrica) since November 2016. Affiliated with the university since 2008 as a researcher, she holds dual specialization in Pediatrics (1994) and Anesthesia/Intensive Care (2009).
Her research spans three interconnected domains: neonatal respiratory physiology investigating high-flow nasal cannula mechanics and bronchiolitis pathophysiology; pediatric gastrointestinal disorders focusing on Crohn's disease monitoring through pan-enteric endoscopy; and critical care innovations in ventilator waveform analysis and toxic inhalation injuries. Current projects include validating oxygen therapy hoods for respiratory monitoring in children receiving HFNC.
Her publication record shows consistent output in high-impact journals including Clinical Case Reports, Frontiers in Pediatrics, and Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. Recent work demonstrates methodological evolution from clinical case reports (2025 chlorine exposure case) toward computational respiratory modeling (2025 tidal volume algorithm) and population-level vaccine behavior studies (2023).
She teaches pediatric nursing courses including Maternal-Infant Nursing and Pediatric Emergency Care across multiple degree programs at Sapienza University. Her clinical teaching occurs through mixed-mode instruction (50% in-person/50% online) with office hours available at Umberto I Policlinico's Pediatric ICU.
