Denis Cozzi, MD, is Full Professor of Pediatric Surgery at the Sapienza University of Rome and Director of the Pediatric Surgery Unit at Policlinico Umberto I. Since December 2024 he holds the Chair of Pediatric Surgery (scientific sector MEDS-14/B) and leads undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across multiple degree courses in Medicine & Surgery and the Paediatrics Specialisation School.

Research Focus:
Prof. Cozzi’s clinical and scientific activity centres on general and neonatal pediatric surgery, minimally-invasive approaches, pediatric urology, and oncological surgery. He coordinates national reference pathways for rare diseases such as esophageal atresia, gastroschisis, biliary atresia, congenital megacolon and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, and has pioneered nephron-sparing strategies for Wilms tumor.
His work is documented in over 140 peer-reviewed papers (H-Index 21, >1 489 citations) and 22 book chapters. He sits on the editorial boards of Pediatric Surgery International, Children, Current Pediatric Reviews and Case Reports in Pediatrics, and has reviewed for leading journals including Journal of Pediatric Surgery and Urology.
Current Research Projects:
- Miniature apical axillary approach for type-C esophageal atresia
- Cavectomy with/without reconstruction in Wilms tumor with IVC involvement
- Long-term fate of the renal remnant after nephron-sparing surgery in children
Prof. Cozzi runs a busy clinical service, teaches daily, and continues to drive innovation in minimally invasive and organ-sparing pediatric surgery.
