Paola Dematte is a Professor of Chinese Art and Archaeology at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), affiliated with the Theory and History of Art and Design faculty. She holds a Laurea in Chinese Language and Literature from Università degli Studi di Venezia (Italy), and an MA/PhD in Archaeology from UCLA. Her academic career includes roles such as Chief Critic at the European Honors Program in Rome (2018–19), where she mentored students and organized exhibitions.
Research focuses on Neolithic and Bronze Age China, origins of writing systems, early urbanism, and Silk Road Buddhist art. She co-curated the Getty Center exhibition China on Paper (2007) and co-authored its award-winning catalog (2011). Key publications include The Origins of Chinese Writing (Oxford UP, 2022), which traces script development from Neolithic to Bronze Age China.
Awards include the Leab American Book Prices Current Exhibition Award for China on Paper. Her work bridges archaeology, art history, and cross-cultural studies, emphasizing East-West exchanges. She has advised students on studio projects and contributed to international collaborations in cultural heritage research.
