Pantelis Michelakis is an Associate Professor of Classical Reception at the University of Oxford, serving as Director of the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama (APGRD) and a Fellow at St Hilda's College. His academic background includes a BA from the University of Crete (1993), MA from University College London (1994), and PhD from the University of Cambridge (1998). He previously taught at the University of Bristol (2002-2024) and held research fellowships at institutions including Princeton and the Free University of Berlin.
His research focuses on Archaic and classical Greek literature, Greek theatre, and the reception of classical drama in modern media. Key areas include media theory, film/TV history, and digital humanities. He has authored influential works like Classics and Media Theory (2020) and edited journals such as Classical Receptions Journal.
Michelakis' work bridges classical studies with modern media, examining topics like tragedy in film, silent cinema portrayals of antiquity, and medical humanities perspectives on classical texts. He has received fellowships and holds leadership roles in academic organizations, including Honorary President of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies.
His teaching covers tragedy, classical adaptations in modern media, and reception theory.
