Panagiotis Ioannou is a Professor of Art History at the Department of History and Archaeology, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Crete. Based in Rethymno, Crete, he has established himself as a leading scholar specializing in Italian and Spanish art from the 14th to 17th centuries, with particular expertise in El Greco studies, historiographical problems of art history, and relations between Greek and Italian art during the 18th-19th centuries.
His research interests encompass a broad spectrum of art historical inquiry, focusing particularly on the intersection of Greek and Italian artistic traditions, the evolution of artistic styles during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and the theoretical frameworks that have shaped art historical discourse. Ioannou has made significant contributions to our understanding of El Greco's work and legacy, as well as the broader context of Mediterranean artistic exchange.
His extensive publication record demonstrates expertise across multiple domains of art history, with particular emphasis on El Greco studies, Italian Baroque art, Spanish art, and 19th century Italian art.
