National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Scienceمعرفی
Professor Pamela C Ronald holds a dual appointment in the Department of Plant Pathology and the Genome Center at the University of California, Davis, where she directs Grass Genetics research at the Joint Bioenergy Institute (JBEI) in Emeryville. Her work bridges fundamental plant immunity research with sustainable agricultural applications.
Research Focus
Dr. Ronald's laboratory investigates molecular mechanisms of plant-pathogen interactions, specializing in rice immune receptors like XA21 and their role in combating bacterial blight caused by Xanthomonas oryzae. Her team employs genetic, biochemical, and genomic approaches to decode defense signaling pathways while exploring connections between metabolism and immunity. This research directly informs strategies for developing disease-resistant crops through precision breeding rather than transgenic modification.
Scientific Recognition
- Recipient of USDA's 2008 National Research Initiative Discovery Award for elucidating rice immune receptors
- Awarded 2009 National Association of Science Writers Science in Society Journalism Prize
- Named among Fast Company's 100 Most Creative People in Business for integrating science communication with research
Academic Contributions
As a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Ronald actively promotes evidence-based dialogue about agricultural biotechnology. Her co-authored book Tomorrow's Table: Organic Farming, Genetics, & the Future of Food addresses misconceptions at the intersection of organic farming and genetic research. Current work focuses on translating basic discoveries in grass genetics into bioenergy crop improvements at JBEI.
