Dr Pallavi Singh is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the School of Life Sciences, University of Essex. She leads the Plant Molecular Physiology and Functional Genomics research group and serves as a Gatsby Mentor in the UK Gatsby Plant Science Network.
- PhD in Plant Genome Research (2016), National Institute of Plant Genome Research
- MSc in Biochemistry (2010), University of Lucknow
- BSc (2008), University of Lucknow
Her research focuses on understanding and enhancing water use efficiency (WUE) in C4 plants through:
- Natural variation analysis in Gynandropsis gynandra and Amaranthus
- Single-cell sequencing and epidermal cell enrichment
- Genome editing for guard cell-specific manipulation
- Cereal grafting to dissect interspecific water use strategies
- Investigating evolutionary innovations in grass species
Her 2023–2025 publications reveal expertise in C4 photosynthesis evolution, leaf venation/nutrition, monocot grafting, and transcriptional regulation. Key funders include BBSRC, Gatsby Charitable Foundation, and Medical Research Council.
Scientific Awards:
- UKRI-Future Leaders Fellow
- John Henry Coates Fellow, Emmanuel College
- Gatsby Mentor
She supervises PhD students Piotr Jerzy Kasznicki and Shashi Kant Jha, and her lab (The Pallavi Singh Lab) develops climate-resilient crops through interdisciplinary approaches.
