Paisley Currah is a Professor of Political Science and Women’s & Gender Studies at Brooklyn College, and of Political Science, Women’s & Gender Studies, and English at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. In 2024-25, he will serve as a Member at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton.
Education:
- BA in Political Studies from Queen's University at Kingston, Canada
- MA and PhD in Government from Cornell University
Currah’s research focuses on transgender rights, discrimination, sex reclassification, and the historical regulation of gender through law and policy. He is a co-editor of the journal TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly (2014-2019) and author of the acclaimed book Sex Is as Sex Does: Governing Transgender Identity (2022), which analyzes legal frameworks for transgender identity. His current book project, Legislating Gender, examines anti-trans legislation in historical context.

Currah is a prominent advocate for transgender rights, having co-founded the Transgender Law and Policy Institute, served on the founding board of Global Action for Trans Equality, and advised Human Rights Watch’s LGBT Program. His work bridges academic scholarship and policy activism, addressing systemic discrimination and legal governance of gender identity.
