Red Washburn is a Professor of English and Women’s and Gender Studies at Kingsborough Community College, City University of New York (CUNY). They also teach Women’s and Gender Studies at Brooklyn College and hold Affiliate Faculty status in Women’s and Gender Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. Additionally, Washburn serves as co-editor of Women's Studies Quarterly published by The Feminist Press.
Washburn's research interrogates the intersections of gender, incarceration, and cultural production through Gender Studies, Trans Studies, and Prison Writing frameworks. Their work repositions Irish women's prison narratives within social movements while pioneering analysis of nonbinary expression in literature and visual art. This interdisciplinary approach connects historical Irish political struggles with contemporary transatlantic movements like #MeToo and Black Lives Matter, emphasizing carceral state critiques and intersectional justice.
