Paddy Walker is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Buckingham’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences, specializing in modern war studies. He serves as Managing Director of the Leon group, a fifth-generation family office, and holds affiliations with the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Imperial War Museum’s Institute for the Public Understanding of War and Conflict, and the Royal Company of Archers (the King’s official bodyguard in Scotland).
- Education: Durham University (undergraduate), Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, MBA from Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, Masters from the University of Buckingham’s School of Modern War Studies, and PhD from Buckingham’s School of Humanities on autonomous weapons.
His research focuses on autonomous weapons, challenges to their deployment, and broader modern conflict dynamics. He has co-authored books on warfare, including War’s Changed Landscape? A Primer on Conflict’s Forms and Norms (with Peter Roberts) and War Without Oversight: Why We Need Humans on the Battlefield (2025).
Walker has held leadership roles in NGOs, including former Co-chair of the London Committee of Human Rights Watch and directorship at Article 36, a charity addressing civilian harm from weapons. He also chaired the UK’s Institute of Family Business Family Office Forum and participates in Leon’s philanthropy Council.
