معرفی
Pablo Nakagawa, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). He holds a PhD from the University of Buenos Aires and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Iowa under Dr. Curt Sigmund. His research focuses on understanding molecular and neurogenic mechanisms underlying hypertension and autonomic dysfunction, particularly the role of the brain renin-angiotensin system (RAS). He leads the Nakagawa Lab, which combines genetics, neuroanatomy, and advanced imaging to study renin-expressing neurons in the brainstem and their impact on blood pressure regulation.
Education:
- PhD in Physiology, University of Buenos Aires (mentored by Dr. Oscar A. Carretero)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, University of Iowa (mentored by Dr. Curt Sigmund)
Research Interests: Dr. Nakagawa’s work centers on identifying novel renin-producing neurons in the nucleus ambiguus and their role in hypertension. His lab employs genetically engineered models, fluorescent biosensors, optogenetics, and chemogenetics to study neuronal circuits and cardiovascular function.
Key Achievements:
- Recipient of the NIH K01 Award (2019), enabling his transition to independent faculty
- Finalist for the American Heart Association Stephanie Watts Career Development Award (2023)
- Recipient of the Michael Keelan Award (2024) and Advancing Healthy Wisconsin Grant (2022)
Lab and Team: The Nakagawa Lab emphasizes mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration. Current projects include mapping renin-expressing neurons, developing optogenetic tools, and investigating the brain RAS’s role in autonomic imbalance. Team members include graduate students Mina Ghobrial and Katie Kaminski, as well as research scientists and technologists.
