Aaron Mickle is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, with secondary appointments in Neurosurgery, Urology, and Biomedical Engineering. He holds a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Iowa and completed postdoctoral training at Washington University in St. Louis. His research focuses on neuronal control of bladder dysfunction and pain, integrating molecular, cellular, and whole-animal approaches to understand mechanisms underlying bladder sensory function and visceral pain.
Dr. Mickle’s lab develops innovative tools for studying bladder physiology, including optogenetic and implantable biomedicine technologies. Key research areas include angiotensin signaling in bladder pain, spinal cord injury-induced bladder dysfunction, and urothelial cell sensory signaling. He has received numerous awards, including the 2023 Excellence Award for Assistant Professors and NIH grants for postdoctoral training.
- Education:
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Washington University in St. Louis (2019)
- PhD, Pharmacology, University of Iowa (2014)
- BS, Biology, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (2007)
His lab actively mentors graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and undergraduates, emphasizing collaborative, interdisciplinary training. Notable projects include optogenetic neuromodulation for spinal cord injury and development of noninvasive strain gauge technologies for bladder monitoring.
