Dr. Natalia M. Mathieu is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), where she conducts research on neuronal mechanisms regulating cardiovascular and metabolic physiology with emphasis on women's health. She earned her PhD in Physiology from MCW in 2024 and previously completed a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Vermont.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Physiology from the Medical College of Wisconsin (2024)
- Post-Baccalaureate in Biomedical Engineering & Physiology from Mayo Clinic (2019)
- BSc in Biomedical Engineering from EIA University & CES University (2017)
Dr. Mathieu's research investigates how neural pathways control cardiovascular function and interact with metabolic processes, addressing critical gaps in understanding sex-specific physiological regulation. Her work employs advanced techniques to explore neuronal mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disorders with direct relevance to women's health outcomes.
Her scientific contributions have been recognized through numerous prestigious awards:
- 2025: T32 Postdoctoral Fellowship - Cardiovascular Research Center, MCW
- 2025: MCW Physiology PhD Excellence Award
- 2024: Winner predoctoral presentation competition - Water & Electrolyte Section, APS Summit
- 2023: Steven M. Horvath Research Recognition Award - Water & Electrolyte Section, APS Summit
- 2022: AHA Predoctoral Fellowship
- 2022: Cardio-renal Research Center Graduate Student Research Symposium Travel Award - University of Mississippi Medical Center
- 2022: Underrepresented Minorities Research Recognition Award - Hypertension Scientific Session
- 2022: Plenary oral presentation - Hypertension Scientific Session
- 2022: Research Recognition Award - Water & Electrolyte Section - APS Summit
Her research is supported by competitive grants including the American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship and NIH T32 funding. She collaborates extensively within MCW's Cardiovascular Research Center, having worked with Dr. Curt D. Sigmund during her doctoral studies and currently with Drs. Justin L. Grobe and Gary C. Mouradian. Though early in her career, she actively contributes to team-based research without formal advisees.
Dr. Mathieu operates within MCW's Cardiovascular Research Center laboratories, participating in multidisciplinary teams that integrate physiological, molecular, and translational approaches. Her current projects focus on expanding knowledge of neural control mechanisms in cardiovascular-metabolic interactions, with growing emphasis on sex differences in physiological regulation.
