Dr. Vincent Tassenaar is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Groningen with dual appointments in the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Arts. At the Faculty of Law, he works in the General Law Studies and History of Law department, while at the Faculty of Arts, he is affiliated with the Economic and Social History department focusing on Demography and Health.
Dr. Tassenaar graduated in Private Law, Economic and Social History, Eastern European History, and Eastern European Studies. He completed his PhD in Economic History in 2000 with a dissertation titled 'Het verloren Arcadia. De biologische levensstandaard in Drenthe, 1815-1860' (The Lost Arcadia: The Biological Standard of Living in Drenthe, 1815-1860).
His research spans multiple disciplines with a focus on Economic History, Legal History, and Anthropometric History. He employs an interdisciplinary approach examining:
- The biological standard of living in historical contexts
- Labor law and human rights in private law
- Learning histories and organizational development
- Nineteenth century Dutch history, particularly regarding vagrancy and social welfare
- The historical development of tax administration in the Netherlands
His recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on Dutch historical studies, particularly examining intersections of law, economics, and social conditions. His work frequently employs quantitative methods to analyze historical data, with special attention to height and health metrics as living standard indicators, particularly regarding Drenthe province while addressing broader questions of governance and social welfare.
Dr. Tassenaar holds several significant positions:

- Coordinator of the Law Centre/Citizen's Advice Bureau in Leeuwarden
- Editor of Nieuwe Asser Historische Reeks

He supervises master's theses in Law (labor law and private law) and History (economic/social history, anthropometric history, multicultural society history). Dr. Tassenaar coordinates learning histories projects as alternative graduation options and has led the 'Giants of the Modern World' research project (2017-2023), a collaboration between Groningen, Radboud, and Free Universities examining heights and health in Dutch history.
