Oz Frankel is an Associate Professor of History at The New School for Social Research, part of The New School university. His research focuses on social and political history, particularly 19th-century U.S. and Victorian Britain, with specialties in American Empire studies, print culture, radicalism, and state formation. He holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley (1998).
His work bridges historiography and cultural analysis, examining how knowledge production shapes political and social structures. Recent projects include a transnational study of US-Israel relations (1967–1973) and an exploration of social investigations in 19th-century Britain and America.
Frankel’s awards include the Michigan Society of Fellows Postdoctoral Scholarship (1998–2001) and multiple fellowships from the Smithsonian Institution and ACLS. He teaches courses on historiography, the legacy of Donald Trump, and the 'Uses of the Past.'
His research interests span media and print culture, race, and the intersection of state formation with oral and textual traditions. Current publications include Coca-Cola, Black Panthers, and Phantom Jets (2024) and a forthcoming analysis of Donald Trump’s historical impact. Frankel’s work emphasizes critical historiography as a tool for reimagining societal norms.
