Owen Whooley is a Professor, Graduate Director, and Regents Lecturer in Sociology at the University of New Mexico. He holds a Ph.D. from New York University (2010) and specializes in medical sociology, examining how medical knowledge is produced, contested, and legitimized. His influential books include On the Heels of Ignorance: Psychiatry and the Politics of Not Knowing (2020) and Knowledge in the Time of Cholera (2013), both awarded the ASA's Merton Book Award.

- Epistemological struggles in medicine during health crises
- Social construction of ignorance in scientific practice
