Dr Owen Weller is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge and a Governing Body Fellow at Sidney Sussex College. He specializes in metamorphic petrology and tectonic processes, with a focus on decoding the metamorphic rock record to understand Earth's evolution.
- Education:
- Undergraduate: Natural Sciences at University of Cambridge
- DPhil: Earth Sciences at University of Oxford (2014)
His research integrates field observations with phase equilibria modeling, thermal simulations, and trace element analysis to study tectonic processes such as plate tectonics evolution, mountain belt dynamics, and rare earth element (REE) deposit genesis. Recent work includes developing thermodynamic models for magmatic systems and investigating the Tibetan Plateau's tectonic history.
Owen leads a research group conducting fieldwork in regions like the Himalayas, Scottish Highlands, and Baffin Island. His work with the Geological Survey of Canada on Arctic geology continues, alongside a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship for REE deposit studies. He employs advanced techniques like Raman spectroscopy, ICP-MS, and multi-collector mass spectrometry at Cambridge's Bullard Laboratories.
