John Cottle is a Professor in the Department of Earth Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research employs field, petrologic, and geochronologic methods to study processes that modify and produce continental crust, with particular focus on the metamorphic, magmatic, and tectonic evolution of the Himalaya, Antarctica, and New Zealand.
Professor Cottle's research interests span:
- Tectonics and orogenic processes
- Geochronology and petrochronology
- Laser ablation analytical techniques
- Metamorphic and magmatic evolution
- Crustal formation mechanisms
- Structural geology of mountain systems
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on high-resolution geochronologic methods applied to tectonic problems. The articles collectively explore crustal evolution across diverse geological settings through innovative applications of zircon and monazite geochronology, melt inclusion analysis, and detrital records. This body of work significantly advances our understanding of orogenic processes from the Archean to Cenozoic.
Professor Cottle leads the Geochronology Lab at UCSB where he mentors graduate students including Morgan Adamson and has previously advised Elizabeth Erickson. His research develops novel laser ablation techniques for micron-scale mineral analysis.
