معرفی
Dr. Fred Gaidies is a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Carleton University, affiliated with the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Centre. His research focuses on metamorphic petrology, crystal growth kinetics, and the thermodynamic mechanisms of mineral reactions. He teaches undergraduate courses in mineralogy, petrology, and field geology, as well as graduate courses on metamorphic processes. Dr. Gaidies is currently offering a fully funded MSc position investigating metamorphic conditions near Dryden, Ontario.
His research integrates experimental, analytical, and numerical methods to study rock-forming processes such as nucleation, chemical diffusion, and phase equilibria. Key projects include garnet population analysis in metamorphic terranes (e.g., Scandinavian Caledonides, Tibetan Plateau) and the application of LA-ICP-MS trace element mapping to reconstruct P-T-t paths. He has also contributed to studies on tectonic evolution in the Canadian Cordillera and structural analysis of nappe complexes.
Dr. Gaidies collaborates with institutions globally, including the Sikkim Himalaya and Austroalpine basement regions, and has pioneered software tools like THERIA_G for garnet growth modeling. His work bridges microscale mineral chemistry with regional tectonic processes, emphasizing the interplay between metamorphic kinetics and deformation history.
Key achievements include over 40 peer-reviewed publications, with recent focus on garnet crystallization mechanisms, disequilibrium microstructures, and geochronological constraints on orogenic systems. His research portfolio spans metamorphic petrology, structural geology, and geochemical analysis, with active engagement in field-based and laboratory-driven studies.
