Professor Oscar Valiente is a sociologist and academic at the University of Glasgow, serving as Professor of Education and International Development in the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy. His research focuses on comparative education, education policy, international development, and vocational education systems. He has contributed to studies on dual training models, policy transfer dynamics, and youth transitions in regions like Chile, India, Mexico, and Europe.
Research Interests: Valiente’s work explores how education policies intersect with global development goals, particularly in vocational training and lifelong learning. He examines the institutional dynamics of skill formation systems, policy implementation challenges, and the socio-economic impacts of educational reforms. His recent projects include analyzing dual apprenticeship systems in India and Mexico under the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and studying lifelong learning policies across European regions.
Grants & Collaborations: He leads or co-leads major grants such as the ESRC-CGRF-funded study on dual apprenticeships in India/Mexico and the EU Horizon 2020-funded YOUNG_ADULLLT project on lifelong learning policies. He also collaborates with institutions like the Developmental Leadership Programme (DLP), UNICEF, and the Jaume Bofill Foundation on education governance and conflict-affected contexts.
Advisory & Teaching: Valiente supervises doctoral students focusing on work-based learning outcomes, entrepreneurialism in higher education, and global education policies. He contributes to programs like the Erasmus Mundus GLOBED Master’s program, fostering international collaboration in education policy research.
