Ormond A. MacDougald is a Professor at the University of Michigan Medical School, holding the John A Faulkner Collegiate Chair of Physiology. He is also a Professor of Molecular and Integrative Physiology and Internal Medicine, with a focus on adipose tissue biology and metabolic regulation.
- Education: Postdoctoral Fellow at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Ph.D. from Michigan State University (1992), M.S. from Michigan State University (1988), B.Sc. from University of Guelph (1986)
Research Interests: His lab investigates how adipocytes develop, function, and interact with other cell types, emphasizing their role in metabolic disorders, thermoregulation, and nutrient partitioning. Current work explores adipose tissue catabolism, lipid storage mechanisms, and neuroendocrine regulation of glucose homeostasis.
Recent Publications highlight his contributions to adipose tissue biology, including studies on FGF21 signaling in lipodystrophy, β-catenin deletion effects, and skin lipid deposition. These works span molecular physiology, metabolic disorders, and clinical endocrinology.
- Scientific Awards: Fulbright Scholar's Award, Rackham Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award, Basic Science Achievement Award, Henry Pickering Bowditch Award, Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen Distinguished Mentor and Scientist Award, AAAS Fellow
Mentoring & Grants: Dedicated to training next-generation scientists, he has received multiple grants and awards for his research and mentorship. His lab is affiliated with the Center for Cell Plasticity and Organ Design and Caswell Diabetes Institute.
