Dr. Orly Lewis is a Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the Department of Classics at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Previously affiliated with the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship at Humboldt University of Berlin as a former staff member, her research focuses on anatomy, physiology, and diagnostics in pre-modern societies. She leads the ERC-funded ATLOMY project, an interdisciplinary initiative creating an interactive visual and textual atlas of ancient Greek and Roman anatomy. Lewis collaborates with modern medical experts, integrating digital methods such as machine learning and data science for textual analysis, alongside advanced interactive interfaces for research dissemination. Her work bridges ancient medical practices with contemporary digital tools, emphasizing product design, user experience, and agile project management methodologies.
Her research interests include the exploration of ancient conceptions of the body, particularly through studies of pulse diagnosis, pneuma theory, and medical texts like those of Galen and Praxagoras. She has contributed to volumes such as The Concept of Pneuma after Aristotle (2020) and The Soul is an Octopus (2016), examining ideas of life and the animated body in antiquity. Her methodologies often involve cross-disciplinary approaches, combining textual analysis with insights from modern medical science.
Lewis’s publications include authored books, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles on topics ranging from mental illness in ancient medicine to the philosophical underpinnings of medical texts. Her work highlights the interplay between ancient medical theories and their societal contexts, emphasizing the importance of digital humanities in preserving and analyzing historical medical knowledge.
