Orlando WOODS

Orlando WOODS is a Professor of Geography at Singapore Management University's College of Integrative Studies. He serves as Associate Dean (Research and Postgraduate Programmes), Director of the SMU Urban Institute, and Pillar Lead for Urban Life. His research spans social, cultural, and political geography; urban studies; new media; and critical infrastructure studies, with empirical focus on South and Southeast Asia.

• Education: BA First Class Honours in Geography (University College London, 2006), PhD in Geography (National University of Singapore, 2012)

His research explores intersections between religion, digital technologies, and urban landscapes, with particular attention to smart city governance, multiculturalism, and the Belt and Road Initiative. Articles examine topics like diasporic territorialities in Singapore's gurdwaras, affective dimensions of urban mosquito management, and the political ecology of death in secularised burial practices.

Woods leads the SMU Urban Institute's Urban Life pillar, investigating emergent urbanisms through the lenses of space, scale, and affect. His work challenges techno-centric smart city paradigms by foregrounding embodied practices, religious pluralism, and alternative spaces of belonging across Southeast Asia.
