Oren Cohen Roman is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at Lund University's Yiddish Centre for Languages and Literature within the Faculty of Humanities and Theology. He specializes in Yiddish literature and Jewish cultural history, with a focus on contextualizing Yiddish literary works within broader Jewish cultural frameworks and examining the influence of German and other cultures on Yiddish literature.
His primary research interests include:
- Old Yiddish epic poems composed between the 14th and 18th centuries
- Yiddish translations and retellings of the Tanach (Bible)
- News transmission among Yiddish-speaking communities in early modern Europe
- The poetry of Avraham Sutzkever (1913-2010)
Currently, Dr. Cohen Roman is preparing a scientific edition of the 16th-century epic Shmuel-bukh, which retells the biblical books of Samuel, supported by the ISF (Israel Science Foundation). He is particularly interested in the Binding (Sacrifice) of Isaac in Yiddish biblical interpretation and how Jewish-Christian relations shaped Yiddish literary production.
Dr. Cohen Roman teaches courses including YIDC01 (Yiddish: Modern Jewish Culture and the Narrative Art of Sholem Aleichem) and YIDC03 (Jewish Cultural Responses to the Holocaust) for the autumn of 2025. He has been invited to speak at upcoming events including 'Living with Difference: The Role of Jewish Studies' in May 2025 and 'Gib mir a penny un varf mikh aroys: Purim-shpil Drama from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century' in February 2025.
His scholarly approach bridges the disciplines of history and literature, examining how Jewish cultural identity has been expressed and transformed through Yiddish literary production across different historical periods, from medieval epic poetry to Holocaust-era writings.
