Oren Bar-Gill is a Professor at Harvard Law School, specializing in the law and economics of contracts, consumer markets, and behavioral economics. He previously held the Evelyn and Harold Meltzer Professorship at New York University School of Law. Bar-Gill’s research focuses on issues such as consumer protection, algorithmic harm, default rules, and the intersection of artificial intelligence with legal frameworks. He co-directs Harvard’s Artificial Intelligence and Law Initiative with Cass Sunstein and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Legal Analysis. He is also a reporter for the Restatement of the Law, Consumer Contracts.
Bar-Gill holds advanced degrees from Tel-Aviv University (B.A., LL.B., M.A., Ph.D.) and Harvard Law School (LL.M., S.J.D.). His work bridges legal theory, economic analysis, and behavioral psychology to address modern challenges in consumer markets and technology-driven economies.
His research interests span behavioral law and economics, consumer contracts, and regulatory policy. Notable contributions include studies on algorithmic pricing, disclosure rules, and the implications of bounded rationality in legal contexts. Bar-Gill has authored numerous articles and books, including Seduction by Contract: Law, Economics, and Psychology in Consumer Markets.
Bar-Gill has received the American Law Institute’s Young Scholars Medal (2011) and the American Law and Economics Review’s Best Paper Prize (2017). His current initiatives, such as the AI and Law Project, aim to address ethical and legal challenges posed by artificial intelligence.
